FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How converting.net handles your files.
- Do my files really never leave my device?
- Yes. The conversion engines (ImageMagick, FFmpeg, LibreOffice, Pandoc, pdf.js and others, compiled to WebAssembly) run inside your browser. Your files are read and written locally; our server only delivers the website and the engines.
- Why does the first conversion take longer?
- The engine for a file type is downloaded the first time you need it – for office documents that is LibreOffice, about 77 MB. Your browser keeps it, so later conversions start right away.
- Is there a file size limit?
- There is no upload limit, because nothing is uploaded. How large a file can be depends on your device's memory; very large videos can take a while, since everything runs on your own computer.
- Can I edit password-protected PDFs?
- Yes, after removing the password with "Unlock PDF" – you need to know the password, of course. "Protect PDF" adds a password (AES-256) again.
