What is AVIF?
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It compresses even more efficiently than WebP, so more and more websites deliver images as AVIF. Browsers display it fine, but many image editors, Office programs, older operating systems and upload forms can’t open it yet. JPG is the universally compatible alternative.
What to expect
The JPG will typically be larger than the AVIF file. AVIF can store transparency, HDR and wide color; JPG supports none of these, so transparent areas get filled and HDR images are converted to standard range. For ordinary photos the result looks just like the original.
How to convert
Drop the AVIF file above, JPG is already selected. Click “Convert” and download. The work is done by ImageMagick in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
