HEIC vs. PNG
HEIC is Apple’s compact photo format, used by iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. PNG is a lossless image format that every editing program, browser and operating system understands. Converting to PNG makes sense when you want to keep editing a photo without adding further compression artifacts, or when a tool such as a design app or presentation software refuses HEIC.
Expect bigger files
Because PNG compresses losslessly, a converted photo is often five to ten times larger than the HEIC original. That’s normal and not a sign of anything wrong. If you just want to share or upload a photo, JPG is usually the better target. Extras like Live Photo motion and depth information are not carried over – you get the still image only.
