Why BMP files should be converted
BMP is an old Windows bitmap format that stores pixels mostly uncompressed. That makes files huge – a single photo can be many megabytes. BMP still turns up from older software, Paint, scanners or legacy systems, but most websites, messengers and email providers handle JPG much better. Converting saves a lot of space.
What to expect
Your JPG will typically be a small fraction of the BMP size. JPG compression is lossy, which is invisible on photos but can create slight artifacts around sharp text or simple graphics such as screenshots or diagrams – for those, PNG is often the better lossless choice. Transparency, if a BMP has any, is not kept.
How it works
Drop the BMP file above, JPG is already selected. Click “Convert” and download. ImageMagick runs locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and it works on Windows, Mac, Linux and mobile.
